The Secret Ingredients To Lasting Love: Safety & Passion...

When people ask me what makes a relationship last, they're often expecting me to talk about communication, compatibility or finding "the one." Whilst all of these matter, I've come to believe that healthy, lasting relationships are built on two essential ingredients: safety and passion.
At first glance, these qualities can seem contradictory. Safety is about feeling secure, accepted and emotionally grounded. Passion is about excitement, desire, curiosity and aliveness. Yet the strongest relationships don't sacrifice one for the other. They intentionally nurture both. Without safety, passion can become chaotic and emotionally draining. Without passion, safety can quietly turn into comfort without connection.
Why Emotional Safety Is the Foundation of a Healthy Relationship
Safety is the foundation upon which love grows. It isn't about avoiding conflict or agreeing on everything. Instead, it's about knowing that even during difficult moments, your relationship remains emotionally secure. Feeling safe with your partner means you can express your thoughts, needs and vulnerabilities without fear of being criticised, dismissed or rejected. It means trusting that disagreements won't threaten the relationship but instead become opportunities to understand one another more deeply.
What Is Zero Negativity in Imago Relationship Therapy?
As a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist, one of the principles I often share with couples is the importance of creating zero negativity within the relationship. In Imago Relationship Therapy, this doesn't mean pretending everything is perfect or avoiding honest conversations.
Rather, it means removing unnecessary criticism, contempt, blame and shaming from the way we communicate. When couples intentionally reduce negativity, they create the emotional safety needed for both partners to feel heard, respected and valued. It's this safe emotional environment that allows love to deepen rather than become defensive.
When we experience emotional safety, our nervous system relaxes. We stop anticipating rejection and begin showing up more authentically. Rather than protecting ourselves, we invest our energy in connecting. This is where genuine intimacy is created, not through perfection, but through feeling seen, accepted and valued for who we truly are.
Why Passion Is Essential for Lasting Love
Passion is what keeps love feeling alive. Whilst it's often associated with physical attraction, passion is much broader than chemistry alone. It's found in shared laughter, meaningful conversations, affection, playfulness and the willingness to keep discovering each other. Passion is choosing curiosity over complacency and making space for romance amidst the demands of everyday life.
Many couples assume that passion naturally fades over time, but more often it fades because life gets busy. Careers, family responsibilities and routines gradually take centre stage, leaving little room for spontaneity or emotional connection. Before long, partners can begin operating more like teammates than lovers. The relationship still functions, but something important is missing.
How to Build a Healthy Relationship That Lasts
The healthiest relationships understand that safety and passion are not opposing forces. They strengthen one another. Feeling emotionally secure gives us the confidence to be playful, adventurous and vulnerable. Equally, continuing to prioritise passion reminds us that our relationship deserves more than simply functioning well. It deserves to feel joyful, exciting and deeply connected.
Neither safety nor passion simply happens. Both require intention. Safety is built through consistency, honesty, empathy and a commitment to reducing negativity in the relationship. Passion is nurtured by making time for one another, expressing appreciation, trying new experiences together and never assuming that love can thrive without attention.
