Sarah Louise Ryan - Qualified Psychotherapist & Certified Imago Relationship Therapist; Therapy for Couples Seeking Safety, Passion and Lasting Connection

When couples first come to see me, they often believe they have a communication problem. Whilst communication is certainly part of the picture, it is rarely the whole story. Beneath recurring arguments, emotional distance, sexual disconnection or feelings of loneliness are often deeper patterns shaped by attachment, life experiences and the ways each partner has learned to protect themselves.

As a qualified Psychotherapist and Certified Imago Relationship Therapist, I work with couples who want more than simply learning better communication techniques. Together, we explore the emotional, psychological and relational patterns that sit beneath conflict so that conversations become opportunities for understanding rather than battles to be won.

Couples Conflict - It's Not Always the Problem

One of the greatest misconceptions about relationships is that conflict means something is wrong.

I don't believe that. Conflict occurs because of needs and longings that aren't met - the argument is never about what it looks like its about.

Conflict is inevitable wherever two people with different histories, personalities, needs and perspectives choose to build a life together. What matters is not whether conflict exists, but how it is understood and repaired.

I help couples transform conflict into connection. That work is possible when both partners are willing participants in the therapeutic process, prepared to slow difficult conversations down, create emotional safety and recommit to understanding one another rather than proving themselves right.

The goal is not agreement on everything. Healthy relationships do not require two people to think the same way. They require two people who are willing to respect difference, stay curious about one another's experience and build a shared pathway towards understanding.

A Relationship-Centred Approach That Supports Both Partners Equally without judgement

One of the defining principles of how I work is that the relationship itself becomes the client.

I do not take sides. I do not appoint a winner or a loser.

Instead, I create a balanced therapeutic environment where both partners feel equally heard, equally valued and equally responsible for the health of the relationship. This allows each person to move away from blame and towards empathy, accountability and collaboration.

This balanced approach is central to Imago Relationship Therapy and creates the conditions where genuine repair can take place.

Supporting Couples Through Life's Most Difficult Conversations

Relationships evolve through many seasons, and each brings its own challenges.

I regularly work with couples experiencing:

  • High-conflict relationships

  • Emotional disconnection

  • Hot and cold relationship dynamics

  • Differences in communication styles

  • Parenting and blended family challenges

  • Financial stress and conflict around money

  • Infidelity, betrayal and rebuilding trust

  • Mismatched desire and differing levels of sexual intimacy

  • Sex and intimacy concerns

  • Escapism behaviours, including work, technology, gaming, pornography or emotional withdrawal

  • Neurodivergent relationships, including ADHD and autism - I work with many couples where both present either self diagnosed, identifying or clincially diagnosed.

  • Major life transitions including parenthood, menopause, retirement, illness and bereavement

Rather than viewing these challenges in isolation, we explore how they interact with attachment, emotional safety and the wider relationship dynamic.

Sex-Positive, Neurodivergent-Affirming and Trauma-Informed

Every relationship deserves to feel accepted without judgement.

My practice is sex-positive, meaning conversations around intimacy, desire, libido and sexual fulfilment are welcomed openly, respectfully and professionally. I understand that healthy intimacy looks different for every couple and that sexuality is deeply connected to emotional safety, communication and relational wellbeing.

I also work in a neurodivergent-aware and affirming way, recognising how ADHD, autism and other forms of neurodivergence influence communication, emotional regulation, sensory processing, intimacy and everyday relationship dynamics. Therapy is never about asking someone to become someone else; it is about helping both partners understand one another more deeply.

Alongside this, my psychotherapy training enables me to support couples where trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, grief or significant loss have shaped the relationship. These experiences rarely affect only one individual—they influence the space between two people - and that is where healing can begin.

Rebuilding Safety Before Rebuilding Passion

Many couples begin therapy because they miss the closeness they once shared.

Whilst improving a couple's sex life may become part of our work together, I believe lasting passion grows from emotional safety rather than pressure or performance.

As partners learn to regulate conflict differently, understand each other's inner world and feel emotionally accepted, they often find that affection, attraction and desire begin to return naturally.

Healthy intimacy is rarely created through techniques alone. It develops when two people feel emotionally safe enough to be fully known.

My Relationship Therapy Philosophy

Since 2011, I have dedicated my career to understanding how people find, build and sustain loving relationships.

My work has taken me across the worlds of psychotherapy, professional matchmaking, relationship coaching and media, giving me the privilege of supporting thousands of individuals and couples at every stage of their relational journey - from finding love, to protecting it, repairing it and, when necessary, helping people separate with dignity.

I believe that secure, passionate and harmonious relationships are not created by chance. They are built intentionally.

That is why my mission is simple: to help as many people as possible create relationships where emotional safety and romantic passion can exist together, where difference becomes an opportunity for growth rather than division, and where both partners feel deeply seen, respected and valued.

I believe love is a skill as much as it is a feeling. When two people are willing to invest in understanding one another, remarkable change becomes possible.

Work With Me - Sarah Louise Ryan

I work with couples throughout the UK and British couples who are international - I work online and offer weekend intensives for couples too.

Whether you are navigating conflict, repairing trust after an affair, rebuilding intimacy, managing the realities of neurodivergence, overcoming emotional distance or simply wanting to strengthen an already good relationship, I offer a balanced, structured and compassionate therapeutic space where both partners can grow together. Relationships thrive not because conflict disappears, but because couples learn how to navigate difference with empathy, intention and courage.

That is the work I am committed to, and it is a privilege to walk alongside couples as they rediscover one another.
